I know I'm not the only player on this console platform that has touched on Heavy. But, I think I'm the only one who truly plays the living hell out of the class. Well over 600+ hours with the big soviet. But I'm not here to brag about how long I've done it or why I'm supposed to be great at it.
This post is about what it's like to be a Heavy Weapons Guy, because I had to learn all kinds of tricks and tactics to not just stay alive, but pull my weight on whatever team I join. Gotta tell you, it can be harrowing, so here's a glimpse of what a Heavy's gotta deal with on the field:
Low Mobility - You're slow and huge, a favorite target even for me. There's nothing quite like firing off a few rounds and any combination of classes coming right at you and taking you down. This also means that it's tough to work alone or hold out until your team can get to you. Because usually, running is a bad idea unless you know how to run and fight. Also, this makes it tough to keep the pressure on sometimes without a decent Engineer around and it makes chasing or approaching targets even tougher.
Ammo Count - Nearly every other class can almost totally neglect their ammo count. Heavies can't and should not. Part of what makes the Heavy unique is his lovely gun, (lady, hurr hurr) Sacha. Trying to make up for other things by using the shotgun is a mistake so you need to be able to use your minigun at almost any instance, this means AMMO. For a Heavy, I find ammo is just as important as my health points.
Combat - Demomen and soldiers have explosives for creative attacks and defenses. Spies have cloaks and backstabs, snipers with headshots... you get the picture. Heavies gotta look you in the eye and do it while avoiding sticky traps, rockets, poised laser sights, not to mention watching your back for the ol butterfly knife while trying to do some damage. This also means keeping a cool head and being able to trace your enemies while they strafe and try to blindside you, AND you have to prioritize targets or you can't kill anyone.
Spy Magnetism - There's nothing like being a Heavy, because nothing attracts spies more... maybe being an Engineer, but my God, I usually get stabbed before a sentry ever gets sapped. I learned to watch my own back the hard way and it makes me formidable against even them, but it's such a threat it has to stay in your mind.
Ignorant Teammates - Many count the Heavy out as far as how useful they can be, so you're usually left with no support. I have to show what I can do before being passed up for Soldiers and other classes when it comes to who needs help. This also means that most would expect you to do certain things alone which is usually a bad idea. With that said, people see you as helpless or useless. Although, many opponents have done the same to me, and you can guess what happens to them... it's usually funny. But not when your team leaves you high and dry. Oh, I also believe that since people know Heavies have the most health, they'll act as if they're nearly invincible, and that's a horrible mistake.
There you go. That's the meat of my usual trials as your, or anybody's, Heavy Weapons Guy. As a damn good one, I will say that I love my gun, what I do, and how I gotta do it and I don't plan on ever stopping. But being the one guy that probably spent the most time on this "profession", I believe you should all know what is like.
